As a member of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I need to clarify some statements taken from Tom Elliot’s open letter to Islam. First, Tom Elliot should know that if we cite a verse from the Holy Quran out of its context, it can mislead us. The verse that Tom Elliot mention is talking in the context of war. In this verse, Muslims had a peace treaty with Paganism. However, some paganism broke the treaty and fight the Muslims. Thus, Muslims fight back to defend themselves. Muslims are obligated to fight only if enemies are taking the first attack. In addition, Tom Elliot should read the next sentence. It says, “If they repent and take to prayer and give charity, allow them to go their way. God is forgiving and merciful”. Which mean Muslim must stop fighting every time their enemies stop fighting as well. Even if in a war situation, Muslim must always try to make peace with enemies. Because Muslims only fight in a war for a self-defense, not to conquer. Our God is forgiving and merciful, and so do Muslims. This verse does not command Muslims to fight non-Muslims every single day.
